You Need More Than a GPS to Navigate This World

tools to navigateLet’s face it. The world of today isn’t one we knew six months ago. It’s become much narrower which, logically, should give you more time to focus on yourself, your space, and your business.

Some have managed to navigate the changes fairly seamlessly, either because their business adapts well to a narrower focus and limited space, or because they do. Maybe both. Others, especially small brick and mortar businesses are struggling. Many have already fallen. It comes down to how well you’re able to adapt, and even enact dramatic changes to how you do business.

As a human, you’re naturally wired to be resistant to change. Some people allow that wiring to remain, while others refuse to accept being limited by something they might even see as arbitrary and useless.

Without such innovators and non-conformists, there would be no internet, no computers, no cars, planes, or rockets. Streets would still be hard packed dirt where horses, buggies, and feet moved people from place to place. There’d be no global businesses, nor opportunities to build a growing, thriving enterprise from the comfort of your own home. Heck! There probably wouldn’t be electricity either.

Reach for the Stars No Matter Where You’re Standing

Sure, a lot of those innovations and modern conveniences have been around for awhile; the people who bucked Nature, notations in history books. But the ability to be innosharingvative, creative, and limitless is still in your DNA, if you’re willing to push past the resistance your mind puts in your way to find your own kernel of an idea. If you’re strong enough to take that kernel, plant it, prune it, and help it grow into a veritable bean stalk of possibilities.

Your physical space may be limited right now, but your reach is only as limited as you allow it to be. Part of expanding your reach is recognizing you can only do it alone to a point. After that, you have to be willing to call in those who are better at some of the necessary pieces than you are.

Those same inner voices that don’t want you to change, also don’t want you to ask for help. They instill fear in you, telling you asking for help means giving up control of your idea.

Like any fear, it’s up to you to decide how you’ll navigate the fears without letting them have the last word. Some might try to shove them into a corner with duct tape over their mouths. A temporary, and not entirely effective fix. I’ve learned the best thing to do is let them have their say, but remind them they have a voice, but not a vote. After all, they’re there for a reason, though keeping you from realizing your dreams isn’t one of them.

Ask Yourself Questions

Asking QuestionsOnce you put your fears to rest, or, if nothing else, give them something innocuous to chew on while you go about your business, you can make clearer decisions about where outside expertise might propel you forward. I typically ask myself a few questions. You can even write them down if it helps you sort things through:

  • What do I love doing?
  • What do I tolerate?
  • What do I hate?
  • What am I extraordinary at doing?
  • What do I do passably well?
  • What am I lousy at doing?
  • What do I feel uncomfortable sharing with someone else?
  • What do I feel OK sharing with someone else?
  • What do I feel ecstatic about sharing with someone else?
  • What can I afford to pay someone to do right now?
  • How much time will I free up that I can use to increase my earnings?
  • How much more can I afford to outsource with the increased earnings?

You’ll more than likely have questions of your own you’ll add to this list. It’s important to ask as many questions as you need to to make you feel comfortable with any decisions you make (but not too comfortable). You’ve built what you have with your own hands, brain, and imagination.

Letting go of some of the day to day activities, much less the larger ones is going to pinch at first. But when you meet and exceed your expectations with increased income through improved client focus, the discomfort will abate. You might even start to let go of the things you tolerate instead of only the ones you hate.

How Do You Measure Success?

I believe the real mark of success is when you:https://www.flickr.com/photos/hades2k/9066963819/in/photolist-8bKqgd-VGPku-FKW56m-WPWCS9-dKvk1x-nBiZxp-7dMfu3-aHR23n-5WdbpM-U2iH99-aXGQQc-ePdysp-dZPsfS-eiwhf2-7AXaSo-6vhN33-7oZNwE-9VmhrF-k46SWU-ehVk2b-9dyS2E-9eZ3NC-brhgWm-fvhgfc-uYQnA-6sBfHt-u6a2mU-VGvd9c-HLAMK1-6B3Q84-RrjH4F

  • Get to do the things you love all day long
  • Get to pick and choose your clients
  • Get to work as many, or as few hours as you choose
  • Get to take time off to play whenever you want
  • Know your business can run smoothly without you while you take time off to play and recharge

For many of you, the first one may actually mean working feels like playing because you’re doing what makes you happy most, if not all the time.

Of course, none of this is achievable if you don’t allow yourself to open your mind, think creatively, and explore all the possibilities. What worked six months ago, may not work so well right now. But believe me there’s something you can find that will work better, and might even change the way you see your business in the future.

Navigate the Future One Step at a Time

One thing is for certain. You won’t find it if you insist on doing everything yourself. There aren’t enough hours in the day, and frankly, you’ll burn out long before you find it, no matter how much of a workaholic you believe yourself to be.

For now, why not look at one aspect of your current practices that feels like slogging through quicksand. How can you make it easier? It might be as simple as re-configuring your office, or re-evaluating how you’re connecting with potential clients. What have you got to lose?
