Who Am I?

Hello. My name is Sheri. Thank you so much for stopping by.

Almost all my life, I’ve written. Simple stories, bad poetry, the contents of my heart; you name it, I’ve poured it out on paper or computer at one time or another.

In the last few years, life has given me ample opportunity to find myself and that unique voice every writer has. It wasn’t an easy journey, nor should it be. It’s a deep dive into the soul which brings out our true nature.

Every Story Has a Beginning

Mine began late in 1993 when my mother took her life. Mom was a complicated woman and our relationship had been turbulent since my early teens, maybe even before that. So it took me nearly a decade and a half to finally put fingers to keys and start talking about my feelings, if only for myself.

In fact, it wasn’t until 6 years after my dad had also chosen to take his life that I was finally ready to hear what those voices in my head had to say.

Excavating Our True Being

The process of excavating our true selves is often difficult, fraught with peril, and downright painful. I have not been the exception.

While knocking down decades-old mortar and bricks, and unearthing things I often felt were better left buried, I learned a lot about myself and the things I’d learned from my parents.

The process gave my writing something completely unexpected, but incredibly valuable. Millions of words (quite literally) from where I started, I’ve learned there’s no need to mask the truth, no matter how unpleasant it might be.

Authenticity with a Heavy Dose of Compassion

Today, my writing and my outlook on the world is what some call “raw”. I paint the picture in all its original intensity without sugar coating or dumbing it down. What comes out is the unvarnished truth, or the truth as I see it. Yet woven through that truth and what I expose when I write is also compassion which was a natural by-product of the demolition process.

I dig deep into myself but also into others to find the core, the diamond in the rough that is the essence of our being. In short, I unearth the authentic self and give it permission to shine, with or without the social niceties, as it sees fit.

I treat that core with the compassion it deserves, that we all deserve, while giving it the voice which might have been stifled in order to survive a combination of familial and social dynamics.
